Funchal Airport to Ponta do Sol: every option (and what they cost)

The Funchal Airport to Ponta do Sol run is the first 35 minutes of your Madeira trip, and every guest at Banana House asks us the same thing two days before landing: “what’s the cleanest way to do this?”. After four years and roughly 180 arrivals coordinated from our end, here’s the answer we keep sending on WhatsApp, written out properly.

Funchal Airport (FNC, the Cristiano Ronaldo one) sits at Santa Cruz on the south-east tip of the island. Ponta do Sol is 28km west on the south coast. The VR1 motorway takes 30-35 minutes through the tunnels under Câmara de Lobos. No mountain passes. No hairpins.

The 30-second answer

Four options. Pick by the table, then read the section.

The honest answer for 80% of our guests: book Mr Elso for the first arrival, decide about a rental car once you’ve seen the island.

Option 1: Rental car (€20-35/day, 30 minutes)

The right call if you’re here more than a week and you want to use the island.

Funchal Airport’s rental desks live in one row past arrivals. Goldcar, Sixt, Europcar, 7M, Five, Magic Islands. Cars sit across the road on the lower level, no shuttle. Sign, walk five minutes, drive out. 30-45 minutes in low season, an hour at Sixt on a Saturday afternoon in August.

Cost in 2026: a small manual is €20-25/day in shoulder season, €30-40 in July and August. Booked monthly through Rent-a-Car Madeira (rentcarmadeira.com), the same car drops to €350-550/month. Mention the Digital Nomads Madeira community when you book; the partner discount is about 15%.

Drive: exit the airport, follow signs for Funchal and the VR1. Stay on it past Funchal, Câmara de Lobos and Ribeira Brava, exit at Ponta do Sol. 30 minutes if you don’t hit Funchal rush hour around 18:00.

Take the super-CDW insurance at the desk. Madeira’s roads are narrow, the walls are stone, somebody will clip a wing mirror sooner or later. €8-15/day extra and you walk away from any damage. Full breakdown in the car rental guide.

Catch: if your flight lands after 23:00, half the desks have closed. Sixt and Goldcar usually run until midnight, the smaller locals shut at 22:00. Check before you book.

Option 2: Mr Elso, private transfer (€55-70 one-way)

Mr Elso is our long-time private driver partner. He’s been picking up Banana House guests for four years. WhatsApp +351 963 674 092. English-speaking, on time, knows the house, drives a comfortable people-mover that fits a couple plus all the luggage plus a surfboard.

Book him 24-48 hours before your flight. Send the flight number, landing time, how many people. He tracks the arrival in real time, so a 90-minute delay out of Lisbon doesn’t mean he’s not waiting. He stands in arrivals with a sign, hard to miss in the small terminal.

Mr Elso is the right call for:

• Late-night arrivals (23:00 onwards) when Bolt thins out
• Families with kids and car seats (he provides them; mention the age)
• Anyone with surfboards, hiking gear, or four-piece luggage sets
• Solo travellers who’d rather pay €15 extra for a guaranteed pickup vs Bolt roulette

Save his number before you land. Half our guests use him three or four times during a monthly stay.

Option 3: Bolt (€40-50, 30-35 minutes)

Yes, Bolt works at Funchal Airport. Uber installs but no drivers show up; ignore Uber. Bolt is the local Uber.

The trick is knowing where pickup happens. The official Bolt waiting area is on the upper deck, via the lift or stairs from arrivals. Walk out, turn left, follow signs for “Bolt / Taxi”. Order from the curb directly outside arrivals and the driver sometimes refuses because airport security pushes private cars along.

Cost: €35-50 one-way. A 22:00 Friday arrival pays around €45. A 14:00 Tuesday off-season pays €35.

Wait times vary. Off-season daytime: 5-10 minutes. Summer peak: 10-20 minutes. After midnight in summer: 30+ minutes and sometimes nothing. If no Bolt is visible within 15 minutes, fall back to the taxi rank (€55-70 metered).

Cash isn’t an option. Add a card to the Bolt app before you fly.

Option 4: Aerobus + Rodoeste bus (€8.50 total, 1h45-2h15)

The cheapest option and the slowest. Doable, not pleasant with heavy luggage, a non-starter after 21:00.

The bus you want from the airport is the Aerobus, run by SAM. Not the Rodoeste 142 some old blog posts mention; that one was retired years ago. The Aerobus runs from outside arrivals to Funchal city centre every 30-90 minutes. €5 single, 30-40 minutes to the Avenida do Mar bus station.

From Funchal, change to a Rodoeste bus heading west. The 4 or the 142 both go to Ponta do Sol; check the destination board for “Ponta do Sol” or “Calheta”. €3.50 one-way, 50-60 minutes, hourly until around 21:00, less frequent on Sundays.

Total: 1h45 to 2h15 door to door. Drop-off is on the main road above the village, a 15-minute walk downhill to Banana House. With a rolling suitcase, that’s a workout. With a backpack, fine.

Take the bus if you arrive between 09:00 and 18:00, travel with one cabin bag, and you actually enjoy a slow first look at the island. Skip it if your flight lands after 20:00 (last Rodoeste west around 21:00), if you have proper luggage, or if it’s raining.

The decision tree

Five questions. Honest answers.

1. How many of you? Solo: Bolt or bus. Two or more: Mr Elso usually beats Bolt on price-per-person and beats the bus on every other dimension.
2. How much luggage? Backpack only: anything works. Wheelie + carry-on: skip the bus. Surfboard, hiking gear, kid stuff: Mr Elso or rental car.
3. What time do you land? Before 21:00 light luggage: any option. After 21:00: Bolt or Mr Elso. After 23:00: Mr Elso.
4. How long is the stay? Under 7 days: skip the rental, use Mr Elso for the airport. 7-30 days: rental maths starts to work, especially weekly or monthly. 30+ days: monthly rental for week one, then ask the house WhatsApp about shared cars. The coliving accommodation guide covers this.
5. First time on the island? Mr Elso. We’ve sent first-timers via Bolt and bus and both worked. But the version where someone you’ve already swapped WhatsApp messages with meets you at the gate, drops your bags into the back, and points out Cabo Girão on the drive is a softer way to land at midnight after a long week.

Late-night arrivals (after 23:00)

After 23:00 the picture changes.

Rental desks: roughly half are open. Sixt and Goldcar usually run to midnight, sometimes 01:00 in summer. 7M, Five and Magic Islands have closed. If your desk is shut, your reservation parks for the morning; the car waits, you don’t get it tonight.

Bolt: thinner. Drivers cluster around landing flights. An hour past the last scheduled landing, wait times stretch to 25-40 minutes. Surge of 1.3-1.5x is normal.

Taxi rank: always staffed. The white-with-yellow-stripe taxis sit outside arrivals every night until the last flight clears. Metered, €55-70 to Ponta do Sol. Cash preferred.

Mr Elso: this is exactly why he exists. Book ahead, send the flight number, he’s there. €65-70 after 23:00. Sleep on the way.

Picking up the keys at Banana House

Whichever option you pick, the handover at our end is the same. Someone meets you at the door. Check-in window is 14:00-22:00; outside that, we coordinate by WhatsApp. The address goes to your phone the day before, the gate code on the day. There’s a free parking spot two minutes from the front door that we share by pin at check-in.

FAQ

Is there Uber at Funchal Airport?

No. The app installs and the map loads but no drivers respond. Madeira runs on Bolt. Install Bolt before you fly and add a card.

Is the bus difficult with luggage?

With one backpack or a cabin bag, fine. With a 20kg suitcase plus a carry-on, you’ll regret the connection at Avenida do Mar (no escalators) and the 15-minute uphill walk from the Ponta do Sol bus stop to the house. We tell guests with proper luggage to skip the bus.

Can I get a taxi at the airport at 2am?

Yes. The taxi rank is staffed for every arriving flight, including the last ones around 01:00-02:00 on summer Saturdays. €55-70 metered to Ponta do Sol. Carry some euro cash in case the card reader is acting up.

How early should I book Mr Elso?

24-48 hours before your flight. He can usually take last-minute pickups within 4-6 hours, but Friday and Saturday nights in summer he books out. WhatsApp him as soon as your flight is confirmed.

What if my flight is delayed?

Mr Elso tracks your flight number in real time; he arrives when you do. Bolt drivers won’t wait; you order when you actually land. Rental desks hold your booking for up to 2 hours past the original pickup time, longer if you message them the new ETA. The bus runs on its own schedule.

Should I rent at the airport or pick up later in Ponta do Sol?

Airport. Every time. Rates are cheaper, desks are bigger, you save half a day. The only exception is a late-night arrival when your desk has closed; take Mr Elso and have the car delivered to Banana House the next morning. Most local independents do free delivery.

A monthly stay at Banana House usually shakes out as Mr Elso on the way in, a rental car for week one or two, and Bolts for the odd Funchal dinner after that. Send us the flight number once you’ve booked and we’ll sort the airport bit by WhatsApp the same night.
